I feel delightful to host the 2009 IEEE International Symposium on Assembly and Manufacturing (IEEE ISAM 2009) in Suwon, Korea in November 17 - 20, 2009. The Symposium aims at providing a forum for researchers and practitioners working on the diverse issues of assembly and manufacturing in various product sizes, production scales, and product life-cycle. The assembly and manufacturing covers from its very beginning in planning and designing to its end in the disassembling process. Especially, this Syposium hightlights the special themes which consist of “Micro Assembly”, “Printed Electronics Manufacturing”, and “Human Robot Cooperative Assembly”. |

The IEEE ISAM 2009 is the 8th in a serise of the symposium that began in Pittsburgh in 1995 first, continuing to Marina del Rey, Porto, Fukuoka, Besancon, Montreal, Ann Arbor and now Suwon. Following the successful symposium over the dozen years, the IEEE International Symposium on Assembly and Task Planning (ISATP) has evolved to the IEEE International Symposium on Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM) since 2007. Personally, I feel plenty of affinities with the symposium as my colleagues and I first initiated the syposium in USA. I take pride in hosting the upcoming event again in 14 years in Suwon, Korea.
On the first day, tutorials and workshops will be provided as shortly intensifying lectures prior to the symposium. On the following day, the symposium will begin with the opening ceremony and the technical program that will consist of formal oral presentations including 4 plenary sessions and a few dozens of invited sessions. Most leading experts relating to the fields will organize the invited sessions under the special themes. In addition to the technical program, an exciting series of social events will offer the participants of ISAM’09 the opportunities of strengthening the interactions and experiencing the Korean culture.
Many thanks to the program committee, organizing committee and speical theme orgnizers, I make sure that the IEEE ISAM’09 will be most informative and excellent in the technical program. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the committee members. I would like to take the opportunity to thank many individuals who are working hard to prepare for the successful ISAM’09, Suwon.
Suwon is a cultural and tourism city in which tradition and modernity co-exist, and where the World Cultural Heritage ‘Hwaseong’ is located. Suwon is also an industrial and economic city where high value-added industries like IT・BT・NT are developing harmoniously and striving to improve quality of life in order to become a happy city. In addition, Suwon aims to become an educational city as well as a healthy community in which different classes of all generation can co-exist. We’d invite you to experience charming and unique Suwon.
Sincerely yours,

Sukhan Lee
